net/http: HTTP/2 Receive Buffer Limit Bypass via Double Flow Control Refund

Exploitable under specific conditions

This vulnerability can affect KrakenD under specific conditions. Review the affected versions below and upgrade if your deployment is exposed.

Reachable only when KrakenD’s HTTP server speaks HTTP/2, which happens when you enable TLS on the service (HTTP/2 is negotiated through ALPN) or set use_h2c to accept unencrypted HTTP/2. Deployments that serve plain HTTP/1.1, for instance behind a load balancer that terminates TLS, are not exposed.

Component

Go standard library (net/http)

Description

Go’s HTTP/2 server refunded connection-level flow control twice for the same data: once when the client reset a stream (RST_STREAM) that still had unread data buffered, and again when the handler later read that buffered data. A client that repeatedly sends data and resets streams can therefore make the server buffer more than MaxReceiveBufferPerConnection allows, consuming server memory beyond the configured limit. The total stays bounded by the concurrent stream limit and the per-stream windows. The fix defers the refund until the handler finishes.
