1. Both products are open source. What is actually different?
KrakenD CE is the same runtime as Enterprise. The core engine, config model, and performance are identical across tiers. With Tyk, the OSS and Enterprise products diverge with each release. The Tyk Operator, required for Kubernetes-native deployments, moved from open source to closed source in October 2024. What is free today is not guaranteed to remain free in the next major version.
2. What do I actually lose if I migrate from Tyk to KrakenD?
Two things worth being clear about. First, the dashboard: KrakenD has no GUI for configuration. Everything is declarative and Git-native. Second, Tyk's plugin marketplace: KrakenD has no equivalent, because the capabilities most teams write plugins for are native in KrakenD. For genuinely custom logic, Go plugins are available.
3. Tyk requires plugins for things KrakenD handles natively. What's actually different?
Tyk's plugin system covers gaps in the configuration layer: payload transformation, SOAP, response filtering, and similar capabilities that are not available natively. KrakenD handles those in declarative config. The plugin system in KrakenD exists for genuinely custom logic, not for standard gateway functions that should have been in the box from the start.
4. Tyk requires Redis. Does KrakenD?
KrakenD's stateless rate limiting operates per-instance with no Redis dependency. Redis is optionally available for globally coordinated rate limits across instances when that is a hard requirement. For most deployments, it is not needed. With Tyk, Redis is a required component for basic coordination between nodes.
5. How does high availability compare between the two?
KrakenD is stateless: each instance runs independently, so HA is a load balancer in front of N identical instances, the simplest possible topology. Tyk requires Redis for node coordination, which becomes another component to keep highly available. The more moving parts in your HA design, the more can fail.
6. Tyk includes a management dashboard. KrakenD doesn't. Is that a dealbreaker?
Not usually, but it is a genuine workflow change. KrakenD has no GUI for day-to-day configuration: everything is declarative and Git-native, deployed through your CI/CD pipeline. Teams coming from Tyk's dashboard model adapt quickly once they see GitOps handling the same operations, but if your team relies on a dashboard for non-technical stakeholders to make changes, that is worth discussing before you commit.
7. How does pricing compare?
Tyk publishes no dollar pricing at any tier. Core, Professional, and Enterprise all route through a contact-sales flow. KrakenD pricing is public, flat per plan tier, and does not scale with traffic or API count. The migration assessment call will map that comparison against your actual deployment profile.
8. What is the real difference in AI Gateway capabilities?
Tyk's AI capabilities are an enterprise add-on layered on top of the existing architecture.
