KrakenD vs Google Apigee: API Gateway features matrix

Features

KrakenD

Google Apigee

Cloud-Agnostic Deployment

KrakenD runs on GCP, AWS, Azure, on-premise. Google Apigee Hybrid still requires Google's control plane.

YesGoogle Cloud only (Hybrid: data plane only)

Declarative GitOps Configuration

KrakenD config is a file in your repo. Google Apigee config lives inside Google's control plane.

YesNo

Stateless Nodes

KrakenD nodes run independently. No coordination, no shared state, no single point of failure.

YesNo

Pricing Model

KrakenD cost does not scale with traffic. Google Apigee cost grows with every successful request.

Flat per instancePer API call volume

AI Gateway (Native)

KrakenD's AI features are first-class config in the same binary. Google Apigee's AI capabilities are separate policies on its control plane.

YesSeparate policies

MCP Server

KrakenD exposes existing REST APIs as MCP tools for LLM agents from the same OpenAPI contract.

YesNo

Identity Management

KrakenD validates identity via JWT, OIDC, mTLS. Identity management stays in a tool your team controls.

Integrates with any IdPBundled (Google)

Developer Portal

Google Apigee includes a developer portal and API marketplace. KrakenD does not, use a complementary tool if needed.

NoYes

Try Before You Buy

KrakenD's Community Edition is the same engine as Enterprise. What you test is what runs in production.

CE = same runtimeManaged trial only

Unlimited Non-Production Instances

All KrakenD plans include unlimited dev and staging instances.

YesNo

Native Data Transformation

SOAP, JSON, XML, response filtering, and field manipulation, all declarative config.

YesPolicy-based

Flat Instance-Based Pricing

KrakenD includes every feature at every plan tier. No per-call uplift, no renegotiation at renewal when traffic grows.

Google Apigee Comparison FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

1. Google Apigee is a G2 "Contender" and KrakenD is a "High Performer." What does that mean?

G2's quadrant position is determined by two axes: Satisfaction (user review quality) and Market Presence (company size, employee count, review volume). Google Apigee's Market Presence score is high because Google has 341,888 LinkedIn employees. In G2 Fall 2026, Google Apigee API Management sits in the Contenders quadrant, high market presence, satisfaction scores at or below category average across every reported metric. KrakenD sits in the High Performers quadrant, satisfaction scores above category average across every reported metric, with 100% of users rating it 4 or 5 stars.

2. Google Apigee is part of Google Cloud. Is KrakenD really comparable?

At the gateway layer, yes. Google Apigee routes, transforms, authenticates, and rate-limits API traffic. So does KrakenD, without a cloud control plane, without per-call pricing, and without a Google account. The comparison is fair at the gateway function level. Where it breaks down is the developer portal, API marketplace, and Google-native analytics, which KrakenD does not include.

3. What do I actually lose if I migrate from Google Apigee to KrakenD?

Three things worth being clear about. First, the developer portal and API marketplace: KrakenD has no equivalent. Second, Google Apigee's bundled analytics dashboards: KrakenD emits data to your existing observability stack via OpenTelemetry, but has no built-in analytics UI. Third, Google Cloud's native integrations: if your team relies on tight GCP service integrations inside Google Apigee, those need to be rewired. What you gain: a gateway that runs anywhere, prices flat per plan tier, and has no control plane dependency.

4. How does the pricing comparison work at our traffic volume?

Google Apigee charges per million API calls. KrakenD charges a flat rate per plan tier, regardless of call volume. The breakeven point depends on your traffic profile and plan tier. The migration assessment call will run that comparison against your actual numbers so you can make the decision with real data, not estimates.

5. KrakenD is open source. Does that mean less support quality?

G2 Fall 2026 Overall: KrakenD's Quality of Support scores 96%, six points above the category average of 90%. Google Apigee scores 90%, exactly at the category average. Support at KrakenD comes directly from the engineers who build the product. The open-source foundation means the core engine carries no licensing risk, it is under Linux Foundation governance.

6. What about Google Apigee Hybrid, where the data plane is self-hosted?

Google Apigee Hybrid runs the data plane on your infrastructure but still requires Google's control plane for configuration management. KrakenD has no control plane. Configuration is a file in your Git repository. If the goal is full infrastructure independence from Google, Google Apigee Hybrid does not achieve it. KrakenD does.

7. Both products support JWT and OAuth2. What is actually different in auth?

The difference is where policy is enforced and stored. Google Apigee's auth policies are configured inside Google's control plane. KrakenD's auth is a declarative file in your Git repo, enforced by the stateless instance, with no external call to a vendor system at request time. For teams with compliance requirements around data residency or audit trails, that difference is meaningful.

8. We use Google Apigee's monetization features. What replaces them?

KrakenD does not include monetization or billing features. If those are in active use, you need a complementary tool as part of your migration plan. KrakenD's scope is the gateway layer.

9. What is the real difference in AI Gateway capabilities?

Google Apigee's AI capabilities, Model Armor, LLM Token Policies, Semantic Caching, are separate policies configured on its control plane. KrakenD's AI Gateway is native config built into the same binary as the API gateway: LLM routing, prompt guarding, semantic caching, token budgets, MCP server. No additional service, no additional control plane dependency, no policy to maintain across upgrades.
